Eight Nigerian soldiers have been killed and twenty-three others injured following an attack by suspected Islamic State West Africa Province fighters on a military base in Cross Kauwa village, Borno State. Security sources told AFP the raid took place on Monday.
About seventy militants riding motorcycles reportedly mobilised from a camp on Dabar Masara island in Lake Chad and launched the assault, leading to a fierce gun battle. The base, located twenty-four kilometres from Baga, has served as a key security outpost protecting the town.
Sources said the attackers burnt the base and destroyed eleven gun trucks before seizing anti-aircraft weapons mounted on the vehicles. The sources spoke on condition of anonymity as they were not authorised to comment publicly.
