Nigeria’s Super Eagles face a must-win encounter against the Republic of Benin in Uyo this evening as hopes of qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup hang in the balance. Team captain William Troost-Ekong, who redeemed himself with a penalty goal against Lesotho after scoring an own goal last month, admits qualification is no longer entirely in Nigeria’s hands.
For a direct ticket, Rwanda must defeat South Africa while Nigeria overcome Benin. Should South Africa win, the Eagles would need a four-goal margin against former coach Gernot Rohr’s side to reach the play-offs as one of the best second-placed teams.

Ekong has called on both teammates and fans to give their all at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium, describing the fixture as “ninety minutes that could define Nigeria’s footballing future.”
