Former Kaduna governor Mallam Nasir El-Rufai has formally joined the African Democratic Congress after departing the Social Democratic Party. He completed his registration in Kaduna’s Ungwan Sarki ward, arriving with a number of supporters, including former aides and local government chairmen.
Mallam El-Rufai, a key architect of the APC merger in 2015, said the ruling party had abandoned the principles on which it was founded. He added that his priority now is to help build a unified democratic alliance capable of offering Nigerians a credible alternative.

His move comes as several opposition figures—including Atiku Abubakar, Mr Peter Obi, Rotimi Amaechi and John Oyegun—consider the ADC a potential platform for a broader coalition ahead of the 2027 general elections.
