Former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai has filed a ₦1 billion fundamental rights suit against the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) and others over what he describes as the unlawful invasion of his residence in Abuja.
In the court action, El-Rufai wants a magistrate’s search warrant used at his home to be declared invalid and void. He says the alleged conduct breached his constitutional rights.
El-Rufai has been in the custody of the ICPC in connection with ongoing investigations, and his media aide, Muyiwa Adekeye, described the search of his home as “unlawful.” The legal filing argues that the warrant violated his rights, including his rights to privacy and personal liberty, and that any evidence obtained should not be admissible in court.

Alongside the request to invalidate the search warrant, the former governor is seeking compensatory and exemplary damages totalling ₦1 billion. He is also asking that seized items be returned and that the court reinforce protections for citizens against unlawful search and seizure.
As of now, no hearing date has been announced, and there has been no response from the ICPC or other respondents.
