Electricity Workers Threaten Nationwide Shutdown after alleged assault on TCN staff in Imo State

The National Union of Electricity Employees (NUEE) has threatened a nationwide shutdown after staff of the Transmission Company of Nigeria were allegedly assaulted by armed police officers at the Egbu 132/33kV Transmission Substation in Imo State. In a statement, Acting General Secretary Dominic Igwebike said workers on duty were beaten, held at gunpoint and some reportedly abducted.

The union said police officers, allegedly acting on the orders of the state, forcibly entered the control rooms, vandalised equipment and disrupted operations. It added that personal belongings of staff, including laptops, phones and vehicles, were destroyed and CCTV cameras were damaged during the incident.

NUEE has directed its members to suspend power supply operations in Imo State until further notice, insisting it cannot continue to operate under what it described as conditions of intimidation and threats to life. The union also demanded the immediate release of the abducted workers and medical support for those assaulted.

It called on TCN management, the Federal Ministry of Power and the Inspector General of Police to provide assurances for the protection of electricity workers nationwide. The union warned that failure to address the issue promptly would leave it with no option but to withdraw services across the country.
