Enugu Governor Approves Salary Increase for Customary Court Judges
Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State

The Governor of Enugu State, Peter Mbah, has approved an upward review of the salaries for the state’s 459 customary court judges. The decision, announced on Monday by the Governor’s Senior Special Assistant on New Media, Reuben Onyishi, will take effect from January and aligns with the state’s new minimum wage of N80,000.

Onyishi explained that the salary increase was prompted by the rising cost of living and the recent national minimum wage adjustment to N70,000. The salary review also includes increases for the chairmen and members of the 153 customary courts in the state, with chairmen’s salaries rising from N42,989.76 to N92,989.76.

In a separate development, the Enugu State Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Kingsley Udeh, has praised the Court of Appeal for its efforts in enhancing the state’s judicial system. He made the commendation during a special sitting in Enugu, led by the Court’s President, Justice Monica Dongban-Mensem.

Udeh highlighted the benefits of the special session, which included the resumption of Monday court sittings after a four-year hiatus due to insecurity. He also noted the decongestion of the court’s docket, which will help resolve long-pending cases more swiftly. The Court of Appeal President, Justice Dongban-Mensem, emphasised the importance of a collective deliberation process to avoid conflicting judgments in similar cases.
