The Governor of Enugu State, Peter Mbah, has granted prerogative of mercy to eight inmates of correctional centres in the state. The decision, communicated to the Nigerian Correctional Service in a letter dated 31st December 2024, was announced in a statement by the Governor’s media aide, Uche Anichukwu, on New Year’s Day.
Governor Mbah approved the release of eight inmates who have served significant portions of their sentences. One offender, jailed for contempt of court, was granted pardon subject to a one-year parole after showing proven reform.

The reprieves are based on the inmates’ ability to reintegrate into society, acquire productive skills, and recommendations from the Correctional Services and the Advisory Council on Prerogative of Mercy. The council, chaired by the State Attorney-General, includes representatives of the Correctional Service, Carmelite Prisoners Interest Organization (CAPIO), and the Catholic Institute for Development, Justice and Peace (CIDJAP).
