Enugu State Inaugurates GBV Steering Committee, Declares Zero Tolerance

The Enugu State Government has inaugurated a steering committee to coordinate efforts in eliminating Gender-Based Violence across the state, declaring zero tolerance for the crime. The event took place at the Government House in Enugu, with the committee chaired by the Commissioner for Children, Gender Affairs and Social Development, Ngozi Enih.

The panel includes representatives from the Nigeria Police, as well as key ministries including Justice, Health, Education, Agriculture, Trade, and Local Government, alongside civil society groups. Governor Peter Mbah, represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Professor Chidiebere Onyia, reaffirmed the administration’s commitment to not only prosecute perpetrators but to also strengthen preventive systems and community responses.

The newly formed Steering Committee will operate under the Oputa Panel approach, aimed at ensuring local relevance and inclusiveness in implementing Enugu’s gender policy. Commissioner Enih stressed that the initiative seeks to protect both men and women, as GBV affects people across gender lines.
