Enugu suspends daily levies on petty traders

The Governor of Peter Ndubisi Mbah has ordered the immediate suspension of daily toll collections from petty traders in Enugu State, declaring the practice illegal. The directive affects traders without lockup shops and takes effect indefinitely.

The decision was announced on Tuesday through the Secretary to the State Government, Chidiebere Onyia, as part of efforts to curb illegal revenue collection and ease financial pressure on low-income residents.

The governor warned that anyone found collecting the outlawed levies, typically between 100 and 200 naira, whether on behalf of the government or privately, will face legal consequences. A task force has been set up to enforce compliance across markets in the state.

Authorities say the suspension does not apply to traders operating from lockup shops, who are still required to pay annual fees ranging from 30,000 to 36,000 naira. Residents and market leaders have been urged to report violations to the enforcement team.
