Enugu Targets 1,000MW Power Generation from Coal, Says Governor Mbah

The Governor of Enugu State, Peter Mbah, says the state’s coal deposits will be harnessed to generate 1,000 megawatts of electricity. He made the disclosure in Lagos during the ‘Meet the Governor Series’ organised by the Nigerian-British Chamber of Commerce.

Governor Mbah explained that Enugu coal contains less than 0.5 percent sulphur content, making it suitable for power generation with minimal environmental impact. He said modern technology would be deployed to ensure the coal is efficiently utilised, adding that the resource would not be treated as a stranded asset.

The governor also announced plans for the Akanu Ibiam International Airport, revealing that its international wing will be operational by the first quarter of 2026. He added that a cargo terminal is under development and said six additional aircraft will be introduced for Enugu Air during the Christmas season.

Meanwhile, the UK Deputy High Commissioner in Lagos, Jonny Baxter, highlighted that Nigeria and the United Kingdom maintain a record trade relationship valued at £7.9 billion. He said the UK remains Nigeria’s largest investor and noted that over 90 percent of Nigeria’s exports to the UK will enter duty-free under the developing countries trading scheme.
