Equatorial Guinea sacks anti-graft boss involved in sex scandal, appoints replacement
Former Equatorial Guinea Director General of the National Financial Investigation Agency (ANIF), Baltasar Ebang Engonga

Equatorial Guinea has dismissed Baltasar Ebang Engonga, the director-general of the National Financial Investigation Agency (ANIF), over his alleged involvement in a sex scandal. The move follows accusations of irregularities and inappropriate conduct, which were outlined in a decree issued by President Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo on November 4, 2024.

Engonga, who is the son of Baltasar Engonga Edjoo, President of the Economic and Monetary Community of Central Africa (CEMAC), was relieved of his duties for actions deemed incompatible with his public office. In his place, Zenón Obiang Obiang Avomo has been appointed as the new Director General of ANIF.

The scandal has raised concerns over the conduct of senior officials in Equatorial Guinea, prompting a swift response from the president’s office to restore confidence in public institutions.
