The European Commission has proposed sweeping measures against Israel, including sanctions on senior officials and the suspension of a trade deal worth nearly $7 billion. The plan, unveiled by EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas, is intended to press Israel to ease its military campaign in Gaza, which has triggered a mass exodus from Gaza City.
While the proposal faces resistance from key EU members such as Germany, it marks a sharp shift in Brussels’ policy. The package includes halting bilateral funding and sanctions on Israeli ministers and settlers accused of inflaming tensions, alongside penalties on Hamas leaders.

Ms Kallas said the measures were designed to improve the humanitarian situation, not punish Israel. But Israel’s Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar dismissed the plan as politically distorted, warning that retaliatory steps could follow. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has already admitted Israel risks growing international isolation.
