Ex-Accountant-General Nwabuoku Jailed for 72 Years

A Federal High Court in Abuja has sentenced a former acting Accountant-General of the Federation, Chukwunyere Nwabuoku, to 72 years in prison over a ₦868 million fraud case.

Justice James Omotosho delivered the judgment on Monday, ruling that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission proved a nine-count charge of money laundering beyond a reasonable doubt.

The court sentenced Nwabuoku to 8 years on each of the nine counts, to run concurrently. He was found guilty of diverting funds meant for security and defence while serving as Director of Finance and Accounts at the Ministry of Defence between 2019 and 2021.

The judge noted that the defendant refunded over ₦200 million during the investigation. Nwabuoku was first arraigned in January 2025 and had been granted ₦500 million bail with two sureties.
