Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has raised concerns over low voter turnout in Saturday’s Federal Capital Territory Area Council elections. In a statement posted on X by his media aide Paul Ibe, he said participation averaged below 20 per cent, with the Abuja Municipal Area Council recording 7.8 per cent.
Atiku, a chieftain of the African Democratic Congress, said the level of turnout reflects what he described as declining public confidence in the democratic process. He alleged that opposition voices are being weakened under the administration of President Bola Tinubu and the All Progressives Congress.
He said the situation, if not addressed, could affect participatory governance in Nigeria. The former presidential candidate called on opposition parties and other democratic groups to work together.
