Eze Ndigbo of Ajao Estate Appeals Lagos Court Conviction

Mr Frederick Nwajagu, the Eze Ndigbo of Ajao Estate, has filed an appeal against his conviction by the Lagos State High Court for unlawfully parading himself as a titled chief.

Challenging the legality of Sections 26-36 of the Obas and Chiefs of Lagos State Law, 1981, he argues that the provisions violate constitutional rights to freedom of expression and association. His appeal, submitted by lawyer Emefo Etudo, seeks a full acquittal.

Mr Nwajagu, 67, was arrested in April 2023 after a viral video allegedly showed him threatening to invite members of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, to Lagos. While terrorism charges were dismissed due to lack of evidence, he was sentenced to a year in prison for assuming a chieftaincy title unlawfully.

Now free, he awaits the appellate court’s decision on his challenge to the ruling.
