FAAN Temporarily Closes Lagos International Runway for Repairs

The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has announced the temporary closure of Runway 18R/36L at Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, for rehabilitation work. The closure, scheduled for March 3 and 4, comes just two weeks after the runway was reopened following an 11-month maintenance shutdown.

In a memo dated February 28, FAAN’s Head of Operations, J.U. Nwosu, cited safety concerns, warning that construction equipment at the A2 Taxiway-link could pose risks to landing and departing aircraft. The directive, addressed to the Airport Manager and the Regional General Manager for the Southwest Region, emphasised the need to prevent operational hazards.

During the closure, all flight operations will be redirected to the shorter domestic runway, 18L/36R. While this runway remains functional, its limited capacity may cause delays for both domestic and international flights. Passengers have been advised to anticipate possible disruptions to their travel schedules.

To ensure smooth operations, FAAN has directed its technical teams to bolster security, inspect airport facilities, and enforce round-the-clock surveillance. The authority assures travellers that efforts are in place to minimise disruptions and maintain safety standards.
