South Africa’s ruling party, the ANC, says it will not support any motion at an upcoming parliamentary debate that will lead to a vote for removing President Cyril Ramaphosa who is currently embroiled in a scandal called Farmgate.
Paul Mashatile, interim secretary-general of the party, announced the ANC’s stance after party leaders held high-level talks yesterday.
Later today, the South African Parliament is set to debate a damning report by an independent panel probing allegations that President Ramaphosa concealed a huge cash theft at his farm.
The three investigators have questioned the source of the cash, saying the President may have committed serious violations and misconduct.
To initiate an impeachment vote against Mr. Ramaphosa, a simple majority is needed in the National Assembly, where the ANC currently holds 230 out of 400 seats.
The ANC says although it will not back impeachment proceedings, Mr. Ramaphosa must “be held accountable” by the party and investigations underway by the police and other organs should continue.
