Nigeria’s air transport sector contributed more than ₦215 billion to the country’s gross domestic product in 2023, according to new figures from the National Bureau of Statistics.
The data showed that the Federal Capital Territory, Lagos, and Rivers states accounted for over 70 percent of the total, with Abuja leading at ₦69.9 billion, followed by Lagos with ₦62.6 billion, and Rivers with ₦22.9 billion.

Delta, Kano, Imo, Enugu, Edo, Akwa Ibom, and Borno also featured in the top 10, which together made up 95 percent of the aviation sector’s output. At the bottom end, Benue, Jigawa, Niger, Kebbi, and Bauchi recorded the least activity, while several states, including Abia, Bayelsa, and Ekiti, had no recorded contribution.
The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria said earlier that the aviation sector now adds $1.7 billion to the economy, with more than 16 million domestic passengers and 3.5 million international passengers recorded last year.
