The Federal Government has approved the construction of a ₦1 trillion Metropolitan Rail Service in Kano State. The approval was announced by the state governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, while addressing Kano’s contingent to the 2025 National Qur’anic Recitation Competition held in Borno State.
Governor Yusuf said the project is designed to modernise public transportation within the Kano metropolis through an efficient and affordable mass transit system linking key districts across the city. He said the rail service is expected to reduce traffic congestion, improve mobility, support trade and attract new investments to the state.

The governor described the project as a major federal intervention that would reposition Kano as a transportation and commercial hub in Northern Nigeria. While thanking the Federal Government for approving the rail service, Gov. Yusuf said the state government would work with relevant federal agencies to ensure transparent and timely execution.
