Federal Government Denies Nationwide Ban on Open Grazing

The Federal Government has denied reports claiming a nationwide ban on open grazing, clarifying that no such policy has been announced. A statement from the Ministry of Livestock Development, signed by Head of Press Oghenekevwe Uchechukwu, confirmed that the Minister, Idi Maiha, reiterated ongoing efforts to transition gradually to modern ranching systems.

Nigeria currently has 273 gazetted grazing reserves spanning over 4.5 million hectares. The government is working with state authorities to revitalise these areas, providing structured business environments for pastoralists while reducing farmer-herder conflicts.

The Ministry stressed that the transition plan does not eliminate open grazing overnight but offers viable alternatives to boost productivity and sustainability. Citizens are urged to rely on official channels for accurate information and disregard misleading media reports regarding livestock policies.
