The Federal Government has launched the Maternal and Neonatal Mortality Reduction Innovation and Initiatives project, code-named MAMII, to tackle maternal and neonatal mortality in Nigeria. The initiative, introduced in 2024, aims to develop local, data-driven solutions for areas with high mortality rates.
Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Professor Ali Pate, launched MAMII in Ogun State as the pilot location, commencing with a five-day co-creation workshop. The Minister revealed that the project will also involve the upgrade of 774 health centres across the country to serve as referral hubs for maternal healthcare.

Ogun State Deputy Governor, Noimot Salako Oyedele, who represented the state’s governor at the launch, described the project as a reflection of the urgent need to reduce maternal and neonatal mortality in the country.
With Nigeria recording 500 maternal deaths per 100,000 live births, the government says the initiative is timely and will provide innovative solutions to improve maternal and child health outcomes.
