Tunji Alausa, Minister of Education

The Federal Government has announced plans to pay Nigerians to acquire skills from technical and vocational schools as part of efforts to diversify the economy and tackle the shortage of vocational skills in the country. The announcement was made by Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa, during an appearance on a TV programme monitored by Radio Now’s Newsdesk.

According to the Minister, the initiative aims to promote a skilled workforce that can contribute to economic growth. He pointed out that in countries like the UK and the US, skilled trades such as plumbing and electrical work can command higher salaries than professions like medicine.

Mr. Alausa explained that the government has developed a four-step approach for implementing the programme. The first step involves paying students to enrol in technical and vocational schools, a move intended to make vocational education more attractive and accessible to Nigerians.

Details of the payments and the full rollout plan will be announced in due course. The Minister stressed the importance of developing a robust technical education system, which he believes will lead to significant improvements in the Nigerian economy.
