Afrobeat musician Femi Kuti has explained why he chose to walk away from his father’s iconic band, saying it was the only way to forge his own path in music and life. The son of Fela Anikulapo Kuti revealed his reasons in a recent interview on the Afropolitan podcast.
Femi said he faced constant pressure to follow in his father’s footsteps, which left him struggling to build his own identity. He recalled how living and dressing like his father made him feel overshadowed, forcing him to seek a separate direction.

According to him, starting his own band was extremely challenging as many fans and critics were hostile, and the absence of social media meant he had no way to defend himself. Still, he maintained that breaking away was essential for his independence, career growth, and personal fulfilment.
