Residents of Ide village in Ifite Quarters, Alor, Idemili South Local Government Area of Anambra State, have called on Governor Chukwuma Soludo to address the devastating erosion threatening their homes and farmlands. The village, which is the home community of former Minister of Labour and Employment, Chris Ngige, sent a save-our-soul (SOS) message to the state government over the worsening situation.
The Chairman of Ide Aka na-ano Village, Chukwudi Johnson, blamed the crisis on the indiscriminate felling of economic trees by some community members, which he termed an “ecological crime.” He urged the Anambra State Ministry of Environment to take immediate action, including prosecuting those responsible.

A visit to the community revealed that many economic trees planted to control erosion have been cut down, while the erosion channel constructed in 1983 has collapsed. The resulting gully erosion has left properties and farmland severely exposed.
The Anambra State government has reiterated its warning against tree felling and sand mining in erosion-prone areas, vowing to prosecute offenders as part of efforts to combat the erosion menace across the state.
