FG, ASUU sign new agreement to replace 2009 pact

The Federal Government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, have signed a new agreement aimed at improving the quality of university education and ensuring stability in the system. The agreement replaces the 2009 pact which led to repeated industrial actions over unresolved issues.

The signing and unveiling took place on Wednesday at the Tertiary Education Trust Fund Conference Hall in Maitama, Abuja. The event was attended by the Minister of Education, Dr Maruf Alausa, the Minister of State for Education, Professor Suwaiba Ahmad, and other key stakeholders.

ASUU President, Professor Chris Piwuna, said the union was optimistic the Federal Government would fully implement the agreement, despite past experiences. He expressed hope that ASUU would not need to threaten strike action before commitments reached are honoured.

The Minister of Education, Dr Maruf Alausa, described the agreement as a decisive turning point for Nigeria’s tertiary education sector. He said it reflected President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s commitment to quality education and an uninterrupted academic calendar for students across the country.
