The Federal Government has moved to allay fears over a proposed 5 percent fuel surcharge, saying there are no immediate plans for its implementation.
Finance Minister and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Mr. Wale Edun, explained in Abuja that the levy, contained in the newly signed Tax Administration Act 2025, is an old provision dating back to the 2007 FERMA Act, not a new measure introduced by the current administration.

His comments follow widespread criticism, including rejection by the Trade Union Congress, which argued the surcharge would further burden Nigerians already struggling with rising costs. Edun stressed that the law only consolidates existing statutes for clarity and would not take effect until January 2026.
He further noted that any implementation would require a formal commencement order, which has neither been issued nor prepared. The reforms, he added, aim to modernise Nigeria’s tax system.
