FG Faults US Lawmakers Over Christian Genocide Claims

The Federal Government has dismissed claims by some United States lawmakers alleging that Christians are being systematically targeted and killed in Nigeria. Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, said the claims were based on inaccurate and misleading data.

Speaking in an interview with CNN, the minister insisted that Nigeria remains committed to religious freedom, human rights, and democracy. He said while some victims of insecurity are Christians, the attacks are not religiously motivated, as both Christians and Muslims have suffered casualties.

Mr Idris warned that portraying the country’s insecurity as religious persecution could worsen divisions and aid the agenda of criminal groups seeking to incite hostility between faiths. He maintained that Nigeria remains a tolerant country where people of different religions coexist peacefully.

He added that the government is investing heavily in military capacity, intelligence, and non-kinetic strategies to strengthen national security. According to him, recent changes in service chiefs and improved coordination among security agencies are part of efforts to ensure the safety of all citizens.
