The Federal Government has inaugurated a N40 billion closed-circuit television control centre for the Third Mainland Bridge in Lagos, aimed at improving safety and monitoring activities on the bridge. The project includes surveillance of both the bridge deck and surrounding waterways.
Speaking at the inauguration on Sunday, the Minister of Works, David Umahi, said the CCTV installation was part of broader rehabilitation works ordered by President Bola Tinubu after the administration took office in 2023. He said the Third Mainland Bridge, alongside Carter Bridge and Iddo Bridge, was in poor condition before undergoing extensive repairs and replacement of expansion joints.
Mr Umahi said the surveillance system would help curb suicide attempts and excessive speeding, noting that security personnel would monitor live footage from the control centre. He added that two Hilux patrol vehicles and a surveillance boat provided under the contract would be handed over to the police to support monitoring and enforcement on the bridge.

He said the project, executed by China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation, includes 240 solar panels, 1,268 solar streetlights, power backup systems and monitoring screens, adding that the project was awarded at N40.17 billion, with about N36 billion already paid to the contractor.
