FG introduces unique identity number for national examination candidates

The Federal Government has introduced a unique Examination Learners’ Identity Number, known as ELIN, for all candidates sitting national examinations from 2026. The initiative, announced by the Minister of Education, Dr Maruf Tunji Alausa, alongside the Minister of State for Education, Professor Suwaiba Said Ahmed, is aimed at eliminating examination malpractice and strengthening the integrity of Nigeria’s assessment system.

In a statement signed by the Director of Press and Public Relations, Boriowo Folasade, the ministry said the identity number will apply to candidates of the West African Examinations Council, the National Examinations Council and other recognised examination bodies. It said the ELIN would enable effective tracking of candidates throughout the examination process and improve monitoring, accountability and education data management.

The ministry also said examination bodies must comply with standardised submission timelines, as the government works with stakeholders to ensure credible, fair and transparent examinations nationwide.
