FG Moves to Connect All Nigerian Schools to Internet

Education Minister launches ₦50 million Student Venture Capital Grant

The Federal Government has launched a major initiative to connect schools across Nigeria to reliable internet services. The project aims to strengthen digital learning, expand access to modern educational tools, and use technologies such as Artificial Intelligence to improve the nation’s education system.

The Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa and the Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Bosun Tijani, held a high-level meeting in Abuja to coordinate efforts targeted at connectivity for all levels of education, from primary and secondary schools to universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education.

The initiative builds on previous efforts by the Nigerian Research and Education Network, which connected many tertiary institutions. The current project will expand coverage nationwide, using broadband fibre, telecommunications towers, and satellite systems, with special focus on rural and underserved communities.

Two technical working groups have been established to drive implementation, one for tertiary institutions and another for foundational and secondary schools. The first phase is expected to show visible improvements within three months, enabling students and teachers to access digital learning platforms and support the gradual shift to Computer-Based Testing for national examinations.
