FG Moves to Integrate Road, Rail and Waterways to Boost Port Efficiency

The Federal Government says it is working towards integrating road, rail, and inland waterways to enhance connectivity and efficiency across Nigeria’s ports. Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, made the announcement on Wednesday at the third Maritime Transportation Industry Breakfast Meeting in Lagos. He was represented by the Director of Maritime Services at the ministry.

Oyetola said the government is also advancing reforms in the maritime sector through the development of a Port Community System — a digital platform designed to streamline operations, reduce processing time, and ease coordination among stakeholders. He noted that these efforts are aimed at improving the overall ease of doing business at Nigeria’s ports.

While revealing that Nigeria has commenced a port modernisation programme in partnership with the Nigerian Ports Authority, the minister added that Apapa and Tin Can Island ports have been selected as pilot locations for the reconstruction of dilapidated infrastructure, with a view to improving vessel and cargo turnaround times.

President of the Nigerian Maritime Law Association, Funke Agbor, expressed support for the government’s reforms. She emphasised the need for robust policy frameworks, regulatory oversight, and private sector collaboration to unlock Nigeria’s maritime potential, given its strategic coastline and increasing interest in the blue economy.
