The Federal Government says it is stepping up efforts to transform correctional centres across the country into food production hubs. The initiative will be driven through public-private partnerships, with a focus on improving inmate rehabilitation and reintegration.
Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji Ojo, made this known at a stakeholders meeting in Abuja. He said the plan is to move correctional facilities beyond custody to centres of productivity, where inmates can gain useful skills and contribute to economic development.
The minister explained that partnerships with the private sector will provide funding, innovation and technical expertise. He added that agricultural activities in correctional centres will be expanded to support food security and equip inmates with practical farming and business skills.

The Nigerian Correctional Service says it already operates several farm centres and cottage industries nationwide. Officials say stronger collaboration with partners will help modernise operations, boost productivity and prepare inmates for life after release.
