FG, NASS Endorse WAEC’s Move to Computer-Based Exams

The Federal Government and National Assembly have thrown their weight behind plans by the West African Examinations Council to switch fully from paper-based tests to computer-based examinations by 2026.

At a sensitisation meeting in Abuja, Education Minister Tunji Alausa said the reform would overhaul student assessment, curb malpractice and safeguard the credibility of public examinations. He described the transition as a deliberate step to secure the integrity of Nigeria’s education system, stressing that the government is committed to leaving behind a sustainable legacy in the sector.

WAEC’s head in Nigeria, Amos Dangut, confirmed that pilot CBT sessions with private candidates since 2024 had shown encouraging results. He added that mock trials and online platforms would help students adapt, while security and access challenges in remote areas had already been addressed.

The policy begins nationwide rollout in 2026.
