The Federal Government has directed the Nigerian Correctional Service to evacuate all inmates from its Abeokuta facility within four weeks due to what it described as deplorable sanitary conditions. The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Interior, Dr Magdalene Ajani, issued the order during the third public hearing of the Independent Investigative Panel on Alleged Corruption and Other Violations Against the Service in Abuja.
Dr Ajani, who chairs the panel, also gave the Service two weeks to submit a comprehensive report on all juvenile custodial centres nationwide. She expressed concern over the illegal detention of minors, the mixing of underage inmates with adults, and poor welfare standards across correctional facilities.

She further ordered the immediate removal of adults from facilities meant for juveniles, citing the example of the Ilorin borstal centre, where inmates aged between 30 and 43 were found. The panel’s secretary, Uju Agomoh, said the inquiry would investigate corruption, torture, degrading treatment, and systemic lapses in the correctional system.
