FG Proposes Law to Make Officials Fly Nigerian Airlines

The Federal Government has proposed a new law that will make it mandatory for public officials to fly Nigerian airlines on international routes. The Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, disclosed this on Sunday during the ceremonial send-off of Air Peace’s inaugural direct flight from Abuja to London Heathrow Airport.

Keyamo said the proposed legislation, tagged the ‘Fly Nigerian Act’, would require government officials to patronise local airlines on any international route they operate. He explained that the law, which mirrors the United States’ ‘Fly America Act’ and India’s equivalent, aims to promote Nigeria’s aviation industry and protect domestic carriers.

According to the minister, the bill will be presented to the National Assembly, with Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu expected to support its passage. He added that the policy would apply to all categories of public officials, including ministers, lawmakers, and directors-general, unless no Nigerian carrier operates the route.

Keyamo assured that the move aligns with global best practices and would boost confidence in Nigerian airlines. The minister reaffirmed the government’s commitment to strengthening local operators through policy reforms and infrastructure upgrades at major airports across the country.
