The Federal Government will on Thursday arraign two senior commanders of the Ansaru terrorist sect, an Al-Qaeda affiliate, before the Federal High Court in Abuja. The men, identified as Mahmud Usman, also known as Abu Bara’a, and his deputy, Mahmud al-Nigeri, face a 32-count terrorism charge filed by the office of the Attorney-General of the Federation.

Both men were recently arrested in security operations and are accused of leading Ansaru, financing its activities, recruiting fighters, and coordinating violent attacks. They have also been linked to the 2022 Kuje prison break, where more than 600 inmates escaped, including dozens of Boko Haram suspects.
Security officials describe Abu Bara as the coordinator of sleeper cells and mastermind of several kidnappings, while Mamuda allegedly received weapons and explosives training abroad. Authorities say their capture marks a significant breakthrough against militant networks in West Africa.
