The Edo State Government has banned the activities of the National Union of Road Transport Workers and the Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria over what it describes as a resurgence of illegal revenue collection across the state.
A statement signed by Secretary to the State Government, Umar Ikhilor, on Wednesday said other groups including ANNEWAT, Drivers on Wheel, and a previously contracted private consultant were also affected by the ban. It noted that the affected parties had violated the terms of their engagement with the Edo State Internal Revenue Service by resorting to extortion, harassment, and intimidation.
The government directed all motorists, traders, and road users not to pay any form of dues, levies or charges to the banned unions, and urged residents to report incidents of illegal collection to the Edo State Special Task Force.
Security agencies have been directed to arrest and prosecute offenders. The government described the actions of the banned groups as economic sabotage and pledged to protect citizens from unlawful exploitation under the administration of Governor Monday Okpebholo.
