The Federal Government has announced plans to establish a special security unit known as the ‘Power Rangers’ to protect power installations and critical infrastructure across the country. Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, disclosed this during a televised interview, stating that officers from the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) will form the unit to combat vandalism that has led to widespread blackouts.
The initiative was inspired by the Mines Marshalls, a security outfit created in 2024 to protect Nigeria’s mining sector. The minister emphasized the need for sector-specific security solutions, saying the government is moving away from a one-size-fits-all approach to safeguarding national assets.

Tunji-Ojo revealed that the selection and screening process for the unit is already underway, with officers set to be deployed in all 36 states and the FCT. However, he did not specify when the unit would be officially launched.
With rising concerns over vandalism and unstable electricity supply, the government hopes this security intervention will curb attacks on power infrastructure and improve energy distribution nationwide.
