FG Upgrades NIN Platform for Nigerians in Diaspora

NIMC Denies Involvement in Sale of Personal Data

The Federal Government has upgraded its National Identification Number enrolment platform to allow more Nigerians in the diaspora to register. The National Identity Management Commission says the enhanced system will provide a more secure, efficient and seamless service. Diaspora front-end partners have been trained on the new platform and are required to activate their licences within 48 hours.

According to official data, 122 million Nigerians have so far been enrolled in the NIN database. Lagos leads with 12.7 million registrations, followed by Kano with 10.4 million and Kaduna with 6.9 million. Bayelsa recorded the lowest figure with 767,620. The data also shows a gender gap, with 66.9 million males and 51.5 million females registered.

Nigeria had set a World Bank-backed target of registering 148 million people by June 2024 but missed the deadline. The Digital Identity for National Development project has now been extended by two years, with a new deadline of June 2026.

The NIMC has urged NIN holders to download the NINAuth app from iOS or Google Play Store to verify their numbers, control access to their personal information and enjoy improved authentication services. The Commission apologised for any inconvenience caused by the upgrade and said a dedicated support team is in place to address enrolment issues.
