Fighting Erupts North of Khartoum as Army and RSF Battle for Control

Fighting between the Sudanese army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) has intensified near the al-Jili oil refinery, located north of the capital Khartoum. The Sudanese army reported reaching the vicinity of the strategically important refinery on Wednesday, after launching a multipronged offensive in the region. Clashes with the RSF were confirmed, with witnesses describing thick plumes of smoke over Khartoum.

Social media footage shared by Sudanese activists showed the army seizing control of the entrance to the town, further escalating tensions in the area. The conflict also spread to other regions, including el-Fasher, where tensions flared earlier this week after the RSF issued a 48-hour ultimatum for Sudan’s army to leave the city. Once the ultimatum expired, the army reportedly conducted air raids on RSF positions.

Fierce fighting continued around the Zarqa buildings complex in Khartoum North, with heavy weapons being used by both sides. The military source indicated that the situation remains volatile, with ongoing clashes across several fronts.

This surge in violence follows months of escalating tensions between the Sudanese army and RSF, threatening to destabilise the region further and complicate efforts for peace.
