Finland Charges Simon Ekpa with Terrorism Offences

The Finnish government has formally filed terrorism charges against Simon Ekpa, a prominent Biafra separatist based in Finland. Ekpa is accused of public incitement to commit a crime with terrorist intent and participating in a terrorist group. The charges were filed at the Päijät-Häme District Court on Friday morning.

According to Finnish Deputy Prosecutor-General Jukka Rappe, the case centres on Ekpa’s activities related to the push for Biafra’s independence. Rappe noted that the court will assess whether Ekpa’s actions online constitute terrorist offences under Finnish law. He described the matter as a “unique and first-of-its-kind case” in the country.

Ekpa, a self-styled leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), was arrested in Finland in November 2024 and remanded for allegedly spreading terrorist propaganda. He is accused of using social media platforms to incite violence in Nigeria’s south-east region.

Although the Finnish government has received supporting documents from Nigeria, Attorney-General Lateef Fagbemi recently stated that the Nigerian government is yet to begin the extradition process for Ekpa. A court date for the terrorism case is yet to be set.
