Fire razes Sokoto mechanic village destroying shops, vehicles

A fire outbreak has destroyed several shops and vehicles at the popular Buzaye mechanic village in Sokoto, also known as Buzaye Garage. The inferno, which began around 10am on Monday, was reportedly caused by an electrical fault, according to affected shop owners.

The fire burned for several hours, overwhelming efforts by the Federal Fire Service, the Sokoto State Fire Service and local residents. According to a mechanic at the scene, no fewer than 40 shops were affected.

Confirming the incident, the chairman of the Nigerian Automobile Technicians Association, Buzaye Unit, Engr Abdulkadir Muhammad, described the situation as devastating, saying many mechanics lost both their workshops and customers’ vehicles. He appealed to the Sokoto State Government for assistance, noting that the full extent of the damage could only be assessed after the fire is completely extinguished.
