First Lady Urges Women to Assert Leadership Amid Senate Controversy

First Lady Oluremi Tinubu has affirmed that the Senate is taking the necessary steps to address the sexual harassment allegations made by Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan against Senate President Godswill Akpabio. This follows a heated debate on February 20 over seating arrangements in the upper chamber, during which Akpoti-Uduaghan claimed her troubles began after rejecting sexual advances from the president.

The lawmaker subsequently submitted a sexual harassment petition on the Senate floor on Wednesday, but the Senate Committee on Ethics and Privileges dismissed the petition, citing breaches of due process and legal limitations.

Speaking to journalists ahead of International Women’s Day, the First Lady stressed that the Senate chamber must be a place of honour and urged Nigerian women to assert themselves in leadership roles rather than being sidelined.

She also acknowledged the significant progress women have made over the decades and encouraged Nigerian youths, especially women, to continue excelling and to lift their heads high in pursuit of their ambitions.
