The Anambra State Emergency Management Agency has opened holding centres across vulnerable areas, urging residents of riverine communities to relocate to safer ground. Officials confirmed that relief measures are being coordinated to minimise further hardship.
Deputy Governor Onyekachukwu Ibezim, who chairs the state’s Flood Management Committee, said joint efforts with the United Nations Development Programme, UNDP, and federal authorities include clearing blocked waterways, upgrading holding camps, and long-term dredging of the River Niger. The flooding underscores the recurring vulnerability of communities along Nigeria’s major rivers.
