Floods Disrupt Life in Lagos and Niger After Relentless Rainfall

Parts of Lagos, Nigeria’s commercial capital, were brought to a standstill on Monday after prolonged rainfall that began overnight on Sunday and lasted throughout the following day.

Footage circulating online showed vehicles and homes submerged in the Ijede area of Ikorodu. Flood-prone districts such as Lekki, Eti-Osa, Ajegunle, Agege, Surulere, and Alimosho also suffered extensive flooding, with residents wading through waterlogged streets as blocked drains and overflowing canals worsened the crisis.

Business and transport activities were severely affected, as motorists abandoned routes to avoid damage, while others took to social media to appeal for assistance.

Elsewhere, in Niger State, several communities were inundated after heavy downpours swept through Lapai, Paikoro, and Mokwa, destroying farmland.

Lagos Environment Commissioner Tokunbo Wahab acknowledged public distress, urging calm and noting new infrastructure had been deployed as more rains are forecast over the coming days.
