Flotilla Departs Barcelona to Challenge Gaza Blockade

An international flotilla has sailed from Barcelona with the declared aim of breaking Israel’s blockade of Gaza. The Global Sumud Flotilla, which says it is independent of governments and political parties, set off on Sunday afternoon amid cheers from activists and supporters gathered at the port.

Organisers described a highly emotional send-off, noting that crews – made up of volunteers from several countries – were buoyed by the large turnout. Swedish campaigner Greta Thunberg, along with other prominent figures, condemned Israel’s military campaign in Gaza, accusing governments of failing to act against what they called violations of international law.

Palestinian activist Saif Abukeshek denounced Israel’s bombardment of civilian infrastructure, describing it as a deliberate attempt to erase the Palestinian population.

The launch comes as the United Nations warns of famine in Gaza, with Israel intensifying military operations and mass displacement across the enclave.
