“Forget about democracy” Burkina Faso’s president tells Citizens

Burkina Faso’s military leader, Ibrahim Traoré, has said people should “forget about democracy” in remarks made during a televised interview on state television. The comments came three months after his government dissolved all political parties in the West African country.

Traoré said democracy “isn’t for us” and cited Libya as an example of what he described as failed attempts by outsiders to impose democratic systems. He also said democracy leads to “bloodshed”, according to reports by French broadcaster RFI.

The military leader seized power in September 2022 following a coup that ousted the elected president, Roch Marc Kaboré. His government initially promised a return to civilian rule but later postponed elections, saying voting would only take place when security conditions improve.

Since taking power, his administration has dissolved political parties and suspended key political institutions. Burkina Faso, along with Mali and Niger, has also moved away from the ECOWAS regional bloc to form the Alliance of Sahel States.
