The Special Offences Court in Ikeja, Lagos, has acquitted and discharged former Minister of Aviation, Femi Fani-Kayode, of charges related to medical forgery. Justice Olubumni Abike-Fadipe ruled that the prosecution failed to establish a prima facie case against the defendant, upholding the no-case submission filed by Fani-Kayode’s counsel.
In her ruling, Justice Abike-Fadipe noted that the EFCC failed to provide sufficient evidence, such as testimonies from associates or legal representatives who could link Fani-Kayode to the alleged medical forgery. The judge also pointed out that the extrajudicial statements presented by the prosecution were not admissible.
Fani-Kayode was facing 12 charges related to the alleged use of forged medical reports submitted in a previous fraud case before the Federal High Court. The hospital that allegedly issued the reports, Kubwa General Hospital, denied any association with the documents.
Speaking after his acquittal, Fani-Kayode expressed relief and gratitude, noting his long-standing legal battles and celebrating his freedom after years of court proceedings.
