More than 200 former EU ambassadors and senior diplomats have called for urgent measures against Israel’s conduct in Gaza and the West Bank, warning that inaction risks undermining Europe’s credibility.
In an open letter, the signatories urged the EU to respond collectively but insisted that if consensus fails, member states should act individually or in smaller groups to uphold international law. Suggested steps include halting arms export licences, banning trade with illegal settlements and restricting data services linked to Israel’s occupation activities.

Among the 209 signatories are 110 former ambassadors, 25 former directors general and two of the EU’s most senior retired officials, Alain Le Roy and Carlo Trojan.
Diplomats behind the initiative said growing dismay within EU institutions and public opinion across Europe shows frustration at the bloc’s paralysis over Israel’s actions.
