Two former senior European Union officials have criticised the bloc’s decision to step back from imposing sanctions on Israel. EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas said on Monday that trade restrictions are being reconsidered because the Gaza ceasefire has “changed the context,” though the option remains open if progress on peace efforts stalls.
Nathalie Tocci, a former adviser to two EU foreign policy chiefs, described the move as misguided, saying this is precisely when the EU needs to keep the pressure on Israel. She warned against a return to “business as usual” with Tel Aviv.
